Before anyone says anything, I know I said I was only going to review zombie books, but I had to make an exception for David Moody’s Hater. There is, however, some mention of zombies and that little section was the deciding factor in my book review. Also, the fact that David Moody is the author of a zombie series titled Autumn, means he has earned a spot on my site. I will review the Autumn series once I can get my hands on a copy.
Danny McCoyne was living a regular life. Nothing exciting ever seemed to happen to him. He has a wife and three kids whom he loves. He hates everything about his dull job. As he was on his way to work one morning he runs into a sight he will never forget. A man on the street seemed to have gone insane and attacked an elderly woman for no apparent reason. The man nearly beat the woman to death until the people in the crowd stopped him. Feeling this sense of fear, the man begins attacking everyone around him. The authorities stepped in and subdued the man. This was the first time Danny came across one of them.
Danny continues living his life and slowly notices that something strange is happening around the world. More of these attacks are reported and Danny fears for the safety of his family. News reporters try to make sense of the situation but no one knows why these people are suddenly becoming hateful. In an attempt to categorize the attackers, news stations give them a name. They are now known as Haters. Danny must protect his family against these Haters and therefore makes a 'safe room', as suggested by news reports. The threat of the Haters comes close to Danny’s home and he begins to realize that no where is safe. In time, more of the population gets infected with the Hater bug and a war breaks out. The uninfected humans must band together to fight off the threat. Or is it the Haters that must destroy the humans?
There’s so much I want to say about this book but in order to save space I’ll be brief. This has to be one of the best novels I have ever read. The writing went above and beyond excellence. All of the characters were deliberate and incredibly realistic. The protagonist, Danny, was an outstanding addition to the novel and I couldn’t have asked for anyone else. All of the action scenes were well written and had me gripping the book tighter as I continued. Even the brief sexual activity within the story was well done. All of the plot twists were wonderful. I didn’t see any of them coming. That’s always a fantastic quality in a novel. I have no complaints about Hater.
There is an audiobook of Hater available and I have listened to it. The narration is just as good as the book. It is read by Gerard Dovie and he did a magnificent job. I honestly felt like I wanted to give him a standing ovation at the end of the story. Gerard Dovie became Danny McCoyne. There is a sequel to Hater titled Dog Blood and is set to be released June 8, 2010. I can’t wait and I hope Gerard Dovie narrates that one as well.
There is absolutely nothing negative I can say about this novel. I loved everything and I can’t wait for the sequel. I will give Hater an impressive 5 Undead Heads out of 5. Hater is available on Amazon, and the audiobook can be downloaded though Audible.com. You can follow the links below.
